Ryan Routh, who was arrested near Trump's golf course in Florida, is charged with attempted murder

Federal prosecutors have charged the man spotted with a gun outside Donald Trump's golf course with attempted murder of a presidential candidate.

The indictment, unsealed on Tuesday, alleges that Ryan Wesley Routh “intentionally attempted to kill former U.S. President Donald J. Trump, a major presidential candidate,” while camping near Trump's golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida, on September 15. If convicted, he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.

In addition, two other charges were filed: possession of a weapon in furtherance of a violent crime and assault on a federal officer.

Routh had previously been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obscured serial number.

The charges come a day after Trump issued a statement accusing the Justice Department of “downplaying” the alleged assassination attempt on him this month, and suggested that Florida state authorities should take over the case.

“The Kamala Harris/Joe Biden Department of Justice and FBI are mishandling and downplaying the second assassination attempt on me since July. Indicting the insane assassin is a slap on the wrist,” Trump said in a statement on Monday, claiming they had a conflict of interest “as they have been obsessed with 'getting Trump' for so long.”

Federal prosecutors indicated during Routh's court appearance on Monday that additional charges would be brought against him. He was ordered to be held in custody pending trial and cannot be released on bail.
