Former Toronto Blue Jays hitter and Kansas City Royals Gold Glover lose roster spots

In the final week of the regular season, the Pittsburgh Pirates made some notable changes to their roster.

According to the team on social media:

We recalled INF Liover Peguero and OF Joshua Palacios from Triple-A Indianapolis and designated for assignment 1B Rowdy Tellez and OF Michael A. Taylor.

Tellez, 29, played in 131 games in his first year with Pittsburgh, hitting 13 home runs and scoring 56 runs with a .243 batting average and .299 on-base percentage.

He is a seven-year veteran who has played for the Toronto Blue Jays, Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh. He hit 21 home runs with Toronto in 2019 and hit a career-high 35 home runs with Milwaukee in 2022.

He will now enter free agency, where he is likely to have several suitors in the offseason.

Taylor was also in his first year with the Pirates, having been signed last offseason. He struggled offensively, posting a batting average of .193 with five home runs, 21 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. He played 113 games for the Pirates and could be in line for a minor league contract next season.

An 11-year veteran, he has played with the Washington Nationals, Kansas City Royals, Minnesota Twins and Pirates. A lifelong hitter with a .235 batting average, he won a Gold Glove with Kansas City in 2021 and the World Series with the Nationals in 2019.

The Pirates are currently 73-83 and will open a new series with the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET at PNC Park.
