Former John Kerry aide arrested on Nantucket for allegedly writing bad check for $1.5 million

A former aide to John Kerry was arrested on Nantucket late Friday morning for allegedly writing a bad check for $1.5 million to a casino, just one day after his villa on the island became the subject of a foreclosure.

Daniel Burrell was wanted by law enforcement in Colorado and Nevada after he wrote a $1.5 million check that bounced at a Las Vegas casino, the Nantucket Current reported.

The arrest came a day after Burrell's island estate was sold at a foreclosure auction for $12.52 million.

Burrell had previously been charged with arrest warrants from Pitkin County, Colorado, the news agency reported, alleging he had defaulted on bank loans totaling more than $75 million, which he had used to pay off his divorce settlements and purchase a yacht and luxury real estate.

This arrest is the latest in a series of legal troubles for Burrell, who served the Clinton administration as a member of the Domestic Policy Council from 2000 to 2001.

Burrell's ties to Kerry include serving as a campaign finance assistant to the former U.S. senator and secretary of state during his 2004 presidential campaign. He once described Kerry as an “incredible mentor,” The Current reported.

“Dan was a recent college graduate who was hired as a campaign finance assistant and eventually finished the 2004 campaign as a regional finance staffer in California before going to law school and starting his own business,” a source close to Kerry told Fox News Digital.

Last November, Burrell was sued by First Western Bank for allegedly failing to repay $56 million in business and construction loans. In April 2024, Alpine Bank filed suit claiming he owed $18 million on an $18.5 million loan, according to Current. An online foreclosure auction was held on one of Burrell's properties in Aspen, Colorado, after he used it as collateral. against the loan that enabled the bank to purchase the property for $24.6 million.

Burrell's casino debt case has been assigned to Las Vegas Justice Court and will be heard either Monday or Tuesday, according to his attorney, Andrew Frtiz. Burrell was unable to immediately raise the $10,000 bail set by the Nantucket judge and was held overnight at the Nantucket Police Department, The Current reported.

“It's my understanding that he was arrested today on a Nevada warrant for owing money to a casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, presumably on these casino markers,” Fritz told the Current at the time.
