Truck driver charged with murder and drunk driving after fatal crash on I-64

A Cincinnati man faces murder and other charges in a fatal crash in Louisville. Prosecutors allege that 58-year-old Richard Piper was driving drunk in August when he caused a rear-end collision on Interstate 64 just before Gene Snyder. Police say traffic in the westbound lanes was slowed for construction when Piper's tractor-trailer struck a pickup truck. The pickup's driver, 25-year-old Colton Tanner, was killed. Two other people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. In addition to murder, Piper is also charged with driving under the influence, reckless driving, assault, violation of Part 392 of the Federal Safety Regulations and five counts of reckless endangerment. Piper was arraigned Monday afternoon, and a bond hearing is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday. His bond is currently set at $500,000 cash.
