Woman sentenced to 20 years in prison after fatal car accident while under the influence of alcohol

CALUMET COUNTY, Wis. (WBAY) – A woman was sentenced to 20 years in prison Tuesday for driving while under the influence of alcohol and causing a fatal car crash last year that left one person dead and two injured.

Bridget Miller entered a no contest plea in July in the accident that killed a 19-year-old Grand Chute man in March 2023.

On March 11, 2023, officers were called to the intersection of Oneida Street and State Trunk Highway 114 at approximately 8:15 p.m.

At that time, authorities said initial investigations revealed the 19-year-old Grand Chute man was traveling eastbound on Plank Road at the corner of Oneida Street in a two-passenger sedan.

Miller was driving a pickup truck south on Oneida Street. Officials say the pickup truck struck the driver's side of the sedan.

The 19-year-old man was taken to a local hospital where he later died. His passengers were both taken to local hospitals.

According to a previously filed criminal complaint, when officers arrived at the scene of the accident, Miller was standing outside her truck and struggling to maintain her balance.

The complaint states she argued with passersby and yelled that it was not her fault and claimed the other driver had cut in front of her. The complaint also states she argued with emergency responders and never looked at the people in the other vehicle.

According to the complaint, a preliminary breathalyzer test showed her blood alcohol content was .193, more than twice the legal limit for driving. Miller had four previous convictions for drunk driving. Based on the circumstances of those previous convictions, her legal limit should have been .02.

In addition to his prison sentence, Miller must pay $300,000 in restitution.
