Edgar Berlanga still has an “optional” fight in his Matchroom contract

Edgar Berlanga says he has one “optional” fight left in his Matchroom contract and that's “up in the air” for him. He says he could leave without taking that final fight, but he hasn't decided if he will do that.

To get the fight Berlanga (22-1, 17 KOs) wants against Jaime Munguia, he will likely have to sign with Top Rank, which is where the Mexican star is based. Munguia already has a fight scheduled for December against Ronald Gavil, so the earliest Berlanga could face Munguia would be early 2025.

“Right now I'm with Matchroom, but I have an optional fight. If we want, we can become a free agent, or if I want, I can have another fight with them. That's still uncertain for me at the moment,” Edgar Berlanga told Sways Universe about his promotional situation.

Eddie Hearn has not said who he would like to face with Berlanga if he decides to stay until the last fight of his contract. He could possibly have a warm-up fight in New York or Puerto Rico.

Berlanga says he doesn't want to fight Caleb Plant because he wants to focus on someone who can bring in PPV buys, but Munguia is the only one who can do that. Hearn can't do that either.

Hearn would love to pit Berlanga against Diego Pacheco, but this guy could beat him and he's not very well known. Berlanga would probably refuse to fight Pacheco because it's a high-risk, low-reward fight.

Assuming Berlanga stays with Matchroom for his final fight, it will have to be someone he can beat, like Trevor McCumby, who looked good in a losing fight against Caleb Plant on September 14. Even McCumby would be a risk for Berlanga, as he can strike and has a similar skill set to his own.
