Greece calls for more pressure on Israel – The Greek Herald

Greek Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis said on Monday that Israel was not under “effective pressure” to end the war in Gaza and its escalation in Lebanon.

The statement comes after 492 people were killed on Monday when Israel launched the most extensive wave of air strikes on Hezbollah, making it the deadliest day in Lebanon since the end of the civil war.

Speaking on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Mr Gerapetritis said the escalation in Lebanon was a minefield that the international community may not be able to deal with.

“It seems that there is no effective pressure on Israel. We are friends of Israel and strategic partners of Israel and we try to be as open and honest with them as possible,” Gerapetritis said.

“We have not prevented the crisis from spreading, and the further the war spreads, the more difficult it will be to find a solution to the situation.

“Lebanon could easily become a zone of enormous hostility, and we cannot deal with that. It is a clear minefield.”

Greece was elected as a member of the UN Security Council for the 2025-2026 term earlier this year, and Athens believes that the country's historical ties to the Arab world and Israel give it the credibility it needs to act as a peace broker.
