NYSP: Driver of stolen car still fighting for his life after accident in city

ROCHESTER, NY — The suspected driver of a stolen car that crashed during a chase Tuesday afternoon in the city's northeast side is still fighting for his life.

According to the New York Police Department, four people were injured in the accident: the driver and two passengers of the stolen car and the driver of another car.

The chase began when police attempted to stop the minivan on Joseph Avenue around 2 p.m. According to police, Austin Scaife was driving a stolen Hyundai when it collided with a car and a tree at the intersection of Nester and Klein Streets. Scaife has life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to Strong Hospital.

His two passengers suffered minor injuries and the other driver, a 57-year-old man, was treated for injuries but was not taken to the hospital. We are working to learn more about possible charges.
