Probation for man who left a voicemail threatening to kill Arabs

A Detroit man who prosecutors accuse of threatening to kill Arab people in a voicemail left for his lawyer last year has been sentenced to 12 months' probation by a Macomb County district judge.

Walter Purvis pleaded no contest to attempted false reporting or terroristic threats at a scheduled jury trial on Aug. 20. Two other charges, false reporting or terroristic threats and being a notorious quadruple offender, were dropped at his Sept. 17 sentencing, online court records show.

According to the records, his probation is subject to standard conditions. He will receive credit for 291 days in county jail. He is not allowed to consume alcohol or drugs unless prescribed by a doctor. He must also submit to random drug and alcohol testing. According to the records, he must work 30 hours a week, undergo mental health treatment or other recommended treatment and have no contact with the attorney and the Clinton Township law office.
