Disney announces release dates for Pixar series “Dream Productions” and win or lose

Disney has announced the release dates for two upcoming Pixar shows coming to Disney+: the Inside Out spinoff Dream Productions and the new original series Win or Lose.

All four episodes of the Dream Productions miniseries will premiere on December 11, 2024, while Win or Lose will premiere on February 19, 2025. The latter will consist of eight episodes, and Disney said in its announcement that these will “air” on February 19, so it won't all be released at once like Dream Productions.

Disney also shared a sneak peek of both series, which you can watch below.

While Dream Productions was first teased in a Bloomberg article earlier this year, it was only officially announced last month at D23. Set between the events of Inside Out and Inside Out 2, it follows a studio inside Riley's head “where dreams really do come true – every night, on time and on budget.” Read the rest of Disney's official synopsis below:

Riley grows up, and when her memories need some more processing, Joy and the rest of Core Emotions send her to Dream Productions. Acclaimed director Paula Persimmon (voice of Paula Pell) faces her own nightmare: trying to create the next big dream after being paired with Xeni (voice of Richard Ayoade), a smug daydream director who wants to break into the big leagues of night dreams. The hilarious mockumentary-style series also features the voices of Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Ally Maki, Kensington Tallman, Liza Lapira, Tony Hale, Lewis Black, and Phyllis Smith. It is written and directed by Mike Jones and produced by Jaclyn Simon.

Win or Lose was announced back at D23 2022. It is Pixar's first-ever original animated long-form series and “shows what it really feels like to be in the shoes of eight different characters the week before the big game – the insecure kids, their helicopter parents, even a lovesick referee – with incredibly funny, highly emotional and uniquely animated perspectives,” Disney's synopsis says. Will Forte leads the voice cast as coaches, and Carrie Hobson and Michael Yates directed, wrote and executive produced.

The Inside Out spinoff Dream Productions will be released on Disney+ later this year.

“These two series really showcase Pixar creativity at its best,” said Pete Docter, Pixar's chief creative officer, in a statement. “We're excited that fans won't have to wait long for more great content from the world of Inside Out. Dream Productions offers a treasure trove of jokes and fun while diving deeper into one of our favorite parts of the first film, the creation of Riley's dreams. And we see Win or Lose as a major, first-of-its-kind tentpole series that really showcases what I think makes our studio great: bold, imaginative storytelling, hilarious humor and characters we can all identify with.”

However, these will likely be the popular animation studio's last streaming-focused projects for some time. In May, Pixar began laying off 14% of its staff, citing a shift away from projects produced for Disney+ and a return to theatrical releases (you can read my recent in-depth report on the layoffs and other problems at Pixar here).

Inside Out 2, meanwhile, is set to hit Disney+ tomorrow after breaking records at the global box office. IGN gave the sequel a 7/10, saying it “may be clever conceptually, but it lacks the emotional punch of the original.”
