Vince McMahon addressed the tragedy surrounding Chris Benoit in the new Netflix documentary series “Mr. McMahon” released today.

The six-part series is available in its entirety on Netflix, with the sixth episode discussing Benoit's 2007 double murder-suicide.

Regarding allegations that steroids may have played a role in Benoit's actions, McMahon said:

“Chris Benoit was considered an excellent wrestler. And as far as we knew, he was a great guy.”

“There is no connection between taking steroids and what happened to Chris Benoit.

“Humans are flawed. Chris is crazy. That happens in every life form and everything, and that's the only thing I can learn from it.”

Referring to CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy), which has been cited as a possible reason for Benoit's actions, and in particular Benoit's use of the diving headbutt, Vince McMahon said:

“This doctor came up with this ridiculous statement: 'Okay, this is why Chris Benoit did that.' Some kind of trauma to his head, and they showed scenes of Chris jumping off the rope and hitting her with his head.

“This is a complete work. It looks like there is damage, but there isn't. We know what we're doing. We don't hurt each other.”

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin also discussed the potential impacts of CTE, saying:

“I worked long hours. I fell on my head once and got a concussion. But other than that, I don't remember having too many concussions in professional wrestling.

“And my opinion has always been: If you've just wrestled and suffered a lot of concussions, you're probably doing something wrong.

“I'm not a CTE guy. I just don't believe in it.”
