Maryland mother charged with attempted murder of 13-year-old daughter – homeless man allegedly shot girl on her way home from school

A Maryland mother who claimed her young daughter was shot by a homeless man on her way home from school is now facing attempted murder charges.

When police arrived in Seat Pleasant on Monday evening, they found a 13-year-old girl with a gunshot wound to the neck. The teen told officers she was shot on her way home from school, according to court documents obtained by NBC4.

Later at the hospital, the girl admitted to police that her mother had gotten into an argument before the shooting. She told police she was walking down the stairs of her home when she heard a gunshot, fell and suddenly found herself unable to move, charging documents say.

The teenager told police that her mother had told her to say that she had been shot by someone who had broken into her house.

In an audio recording of the incident by Seat Pleasant police, the girl's mother, 32-year-old Talecka Brown, told police that a homeless man shot her daughter and that she came home bleeding.

Investigators reportedly smelled the smell of a firearm being fired in the house. When Brown was asked if there was a gun in the house, she told police there was a gun in a safe that did not belong to her.

After questioning, police arrested Brown and charged her with attempted first-degree murder and other charges. Officers said she made conflicting statements during questioning before eventually admitting that she was home alone with her daughter at the time of the shooting, charging documents state.

Brown's bail hearing is scheduled for Wednesday and she will remain in jail in the meantime. The teenager is said to be in critical but stable condition, it is reported NBC4 Washington.
