One person died in bus hijacking in Los Angeles – World

One person has died in an attack on a Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus. The driver was forced to flee from police at gunpoint before authorities were able to arrest the suspect, police officials said.

The situation occurred around 12:45 a.m. when the Los Angeles Police Department received reports of a disturbance on a bus near the intersection of Manchester Street and Figueroa Street in South Los Angeles, Deputy Chief Donald Graham said during a press conference Wednesday morning.

Initial reports indicated a possible attack with a weapon. Officers later found the bus parked at the corner of 117th and Figueroa Streets. However, when Los Angeles police attempted to approach the bus, it sped off, leading to a chase that lasted about an hour and ended downtown.

At around 2:10 a.m., police managed to stop the bus at the corner of Alameda and 6th Streets by laying out spike strips that punctured one of the tires.

Authorities reported that there were two other passengers on board in addition to the driver and the suspect. A SWAT team was called to assist with the hostage situation and was able to successfully rescue the driver and a passenger, according to Graham.

The suspect turned himself in without incident and was taken into custody. However, when police cleared the bus, they discovered that the second passenger had suffered multiple gunshot wounds. That victim was taken to a local hospital but later succumbed to his injuries. The driver and the other passenger refused medical treatment, officials noted.

The investigation is currently ongoing.
