Second day of jury deliberations in the Harding Street murder trial

HOUSTON, Texas – As the sensational murder trial of former Houston Police Department drug agent Gerald Goines moves forward, the jury has entered its second day of deliberations.

The case, which has attracted considerable public attention, revolves around whether Goines' alleged falsification of information to obtain a no-knock search warrant led to the deadly Harding Street raid in 2019.

Key points in the trial against Gerald Goines:

  • Schedule of deliberations: The jury's deliberations began on Tuesday at 2:07 p.m. and ended at 5:30 p.m. without a decision. Deliberations continued on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m.

  • Charges: Goines is charged with first-degree murder and tampering with government records in connection with the deaths of Dennis Tuttle, Rhogena Nicholas and their dog.

  • Prosecution argument: Prosecutors Tanisha Manning and Keaton Forcht argued that Goines' bogus arrest warrant directly led to the deadly raid. They presented evidence, including phone records and witness testimony.

  • Defense Argument: The defense, led by attorneys Nicole Deborde and George Secrest, argued that the raid was justified because of the actions of Tuttle and Nicholas, who they claimed shot at the officers first.

  • In their closing argument, prosecutors told jurors that Goines fabricated an informant and manipulated people to get a search warrant for the couple's home, falsely posing as drug dealers.

  • Goines' lawyers admitted that the former drug agent lied to get the search warrant, but tried to downplay the impact of his false statements. They said Nicholas and Tuttle were responsible for her death.
