Man pleads guilty to 188 km/h car crash that killed wife and unborn baby

BOGALUSA, Louisiana (WVUE) – A Bogalusa man was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to driving while under the influence of alcohol in connection with a fatal July 2023 car crash.

Charles Dyson, 27, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, third-degree feticide, third-degree drunken driving and three counts of first-degree reckless assault.

The accident occurred on July 23, 2023, at around 1 a.m. on Columbia Street, when Dyson's vehicle crossed the center line and collided head-on with another car.

Dyson's passenger, 19-year-old Kenja Crandle, was killed in the crash. Another passenger, Shamar Berry, survived but was paralyzed. The other vehicle was driven by a woman who was eight months pregnant and lost her unborn child in the crash.

Dyson had a blood alcohol content of 0.12% and tested positive for marijuana. He was traveling at over 188 km/h at the time of the accident.
