Warriors sign Kevin Knox

The warrior and free agent striker Kevin Knox have agreed to a one-year deal, sources told Shams Charania of The Athletic (Twitter link).

While Charania did not specify the terms of the contract, Golden State is directly facing a first-apron hard cap and cannot sign a player to a standard contract without a corresponding roster move. So it's safe to assume Knox will sign a non-guaranteed camp contract that will not count against the cap. It will likely contain the Exhibit 9 clause and possibly the Exhibit 10 clause as well.

Knox, selected ninth overall in the 2018 draft, began last season with the Rip City Remix, Portland's G-League affiliate. He signed with the Pistons in early November and played three months in the NBA before being sent to Utah at the February trade deadline. The Jazz immediately released him, and with no immediate NBA opportunities, the 25-year-old eventually returned to the Remix.

This season, Knox played 31 games (11 starts) at the NBA level for Detroit, averaging 7.2 points and 2.4 rebounds in 18.1 minutes per game. Those averages aren't far off from what he posted in 306 career appearances for the Knicks, Hawks, Trail Blazers and Pistons (7.4 PPG, 2.9 RPG, 18.0 MPG), although his shooting percentage last season (46.2%) was well above his career mark of 39.2%.

There is technically a path for Knox to make the Warriors' regular season roster if the team makes a trade or cuts either player. Lindy Water or Gui Santosboth have non-guaranteed contracts. However, recent reports suggest that Golden State will likely hold on to Waters and Santos.

Knox is not eligible for a two-way contract and his G-League rights remain with Rip City. Unless the Santa Cruz Warriors trade those rights in exchange for the rights to return or Golden State can't find a place for him on the NBA's standard roster, the forward will likely only stay in the organization for a few weeks.
