Police sergeant arrested for sexual assault resigns from Delaware County police post

A months-long investigation by county and state police ended with the arrest and resignation of a former detective.

Michael Erickson, a 21-year veteran of the Nether Providence Township Police Department, has been charged with indecent assault.

The allegation stems from an incident in Aston Township in which Erickson was off-duty, according to police, and which “had nothing to do with his employment with the police.”

Authorities have not released further details about the attack, but Police Chief David Splain responded to the arrest in a social media video.

Splain says Erickson was placed on leave when the Delaware County Attorney's Office informed him of the investigation on June 14.

The Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office took over the investigation on July 2 and filed charges last week.

Erickson submitted his resignation on Monday, a day before he was asked to surrender to authorities.
