Armando Champion called the detectives and offered to turn himself in for the murder of Elmo Minjarez

LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Armando Champion, 57, called investigators and offered to turn himself in for the murder of 54-year-old Elmo Minjarez Jr., according to court documents released Wednesday afternoon.

According to records, Champion called investigators on Friday, September 20, and left them a voicemail saying, “Do me a favor and call off the search for Elmo Minjarez. I'm the person you're looking for. Leave everyone else alone, but give me until Sunday and I'll turn myself in.”

Champion said he wanted to have some time to say goodbye and spend his birthday with his family before turning himself in.

Witnesses confirmed Champion's involvement. He admitted to shooting Minjarez and moving the body, and said Champion told him, “That was me. I shot Elmo Minjarez.” The witness also gave investigators a handwritten note apparently from Champion that confirmed the message left on the investigator's voicemail.

A witness told police that Minjarez was shot and wrapped in plastic and carpet before being taken to a second location.

Last week, detectives finally found Minjarez's remains near Guava Avenue and East 82nd Street, near a property associated with Armando Champion.

Minjarez's family said they last saw him on August 16. Exactly one month later, they reported him missing.

Champion is currently in prison for murder.
