Dermot Mulroney's Chicago Fire character will cause “problems”

Looking forward to Chicago Fire Season 13 is an absolute highlight for both fans and the cast.

How to watch

Watch the Season 13 Premiere Chicago Fire Wednesday, September 25, 9/8c on NBC.

“It's a kind of dizziness,” said Daniel Kyri (Knight) NBC Insider about what it's like to film the show. “It feels like you're going back to school and you get a chance to do it again. It's not lost on us how rare that atmosphere is. To come back and tell these stories and do it with people you respect and enjoy working with.”

That group of people changes slightly this season with the addition of Dermot Mulroney's boss Dom Pascal, who takes the helm at 51. If that's not exciting enough, we still have plenty of cliffhangers to deal with from season 12. What's going on with Severide's secret brother? Are Severide and Stella (Miranda Rae Mayo) on solid ground? Will Violet (Hanako Greensmith) and Sam Carver (Jake Lockett) really get together?

“We have some new faces in Season 13, and there are some active arguments between the characters that will make our audience question who is right and who is wrong in these situations and interactions…” added Kyri. “To see our characters either come into line or “Art of Resist will bring fans some exciting heat this season, so stay tuned because it's going to be explosive.”

Chicago Fire Showrunner Andrea Newman talks about season 13

NBC Insider: How is the mood now that everyone is back on set?

Andrea Newman: It's been an incredibly exciting start and Dermot's arrival is part of that. Having a new boss on set is a bit of an earthquake in terms of the whole character dynamic. But it's also like hitting a reset button… It feels like a whole new wave of things are coming our way that we've never seen before, so everyone is excited about that.

What can fans expect from season 13? Chicago Fire?

After thirteen seasons, we have a new chief for the first time. We've changed leadership in the house, and I think there are a lot of new character dynamics that we haven't seen yet. He's definitely not coming in and trying to be Chief Boden. [Eamonn Walker] and wants to go his own way there.

On the first shift, he says, “I'm not Chief Boden, nor do I want to be, and there are going to be some new rules for the firehouse.” So we know right away that there are going to be changes. And how everyone reacts to that will be very entertaining to watch over the course of the season.

What is the biggest difference between Boden and Pascal?

[Firehouse 51 is] a family, and Boden has said in the past, “When someone leaves, they're never really gone.” They're always present in one way or another, and he's the guy whose door was always open and who was basically the father of that family. Chief Pascal comes in and keeps a much more low profile.

He's a mysterious man. He's a student of our 51 crew and he's going to study people closely. And his background will remain a secret to our guys. The audience will get a little glimpse into his personal life in the first episode and after that, but the people of 51 don't really know much about him yet. And everyone is trying to peel back those layers and figure out who this guy is and what he's really up to.

Boden had previously proposed Herrmann as his successor, but there were some bureaucratic hurdles he had to overcome. Now Pascal is coming. Will Boden's blessing cause problems between Pascal and Herrmann?

The exciting thing is that there is a process to become chief and you have to pass exams. And Herrmann (David Eigenberg) knew that and he is making progress as he moves towards that goal. But while he is trying to pass those exams and get the title, someone is already sitting in his place, this chief Pascal…

They can't both sit on that chair. It's not big enough, so there will definitely be some problems between them and then some surprising twists in that relationship.

While Boden is no longer with Firehouse 51, he's still in town as a CFD deputy commissioner. Can fans expect any potential appearances from the former chief this season?

He is present. We have talked a lot about the subject of shadows this season. And Boden's shadow is very strong over the firehouse. When Pascal comes in, he has big shoes to fill, and he knows it. But [Boden’s] not far away… He left his mark on these people in many ways, you can feel it in that respect. But he's also a deputy commissioner now, so he's part of the CFD, and he'll definitely turn up with our gang at some point.

Season 12 ended with the complete surprise of Severide having an estranged brother named Damon. How will Damon's continued presence at 51 complicate Severide's relationship with Stella?

That's a big complication. It's a little bomb that's been dropped there. That kid is Damon's boss, and she now has to decide if she trusts him enough to keep him at the firehouse, and what Severide thinks about that – there's a love triangle there. It's a meaningful relationship with Severide that he wants to build and get to know the kid, but at the same time there are some questions about who Damon is and how he was able to keep the secrets that led to this from his boss and Severide's wife.

How is Stellaride doing at the start of season 13?

The [Stellaride] The relationship is solid, but there are definitely issues that Damon addresses. And they also touch on the whole idea of family that Severide had floating between him and Kidd at the end of last season. This boy is now part of his family, and how he feels about that and how the shadow of [his late father] Benny Severide plays a role that will affect their relationship, that of Kidd and Severide, Stellaride, in the future. But they are very much in love and a very close couple, so it's always entertaining to see them navigate all the big issues, including the future for both of them.

Violet and Carver quickly became obsessed last season, but the relationship ended in conflict. What is the state of the relationship at the start of season 13?

There's a lot of drama between the two of them. I would say they're on a rollercoaster ride. So it ended on a bit of a precipice and they have a lot to work out and I think at the beginning of the season they're having a lot of fun together. And when I say fun, I mean tortured fun – the tortured kind of fun.

Paramedic Lyla “Lizzie” Novak was an exciting new addition to Season 12. Will we delve deeper into her as a character this season?

Absolutely. We're going to get to know Novak (Jocelyn Hudon) a lot better this season. She has this incredible empathy that makes her such a good medic, and we're going to get into the history and the reasoning behind that ability.

Where will Cruz's journey take him in season 13 of Fire?

We love Cruz (Joe Minoso). Cruz has had a great journey this season. He's doing really well professionally right now and is a mentor to the younger guys, but he still has some great stories ahead of him. To have 12 seasons of history in one show is a real gift. You can dive back into it. There's a shadow theme, and we saw shadows and ghosts in season 13. And a ghost from the past is going to resurface in Cruz's life. That's going to be quite a shock for him and the audience, I think. There's a fun story there.

If one had to describe the premiere of the 13th season of Chicago Fire What are these in three words?

Mysterious, explosive and revealing. Things are thrown into disarray and turned upside down.

Don’t miss the premiere of season 13 of Chicago Fire on Wednesday, September 25, at 9/8c on NBC. Episodes can be streamed the next day on Peacock.
