Chico man in court for attempted murder of police officer – The Orion

A man from Chico – Travis Patrick McCarty – was brought to trial in Butte County Superior Court charged with attempted murder of police officers. According to the Butte County District Attorney's OfficeThe fees included:

  • Attack with semi-automatic weapon on police officers
  • Shots fired at an occupied car
  • Possession of an assault rifle
  • Three cases of criminal possession of weapons
  • As a serious criminal in possession of live ammunition
  • Possession of a Ghost Gun

The press release said the incident occurred late in the evening of April 17 in a gated community off the Skyway between Chico and Paradise.

District Attorney Mike Ramsay suggested at Tuesday's court hearing that the charges stemmed from a possible domestic dispute between McCarty and his wife.

McCarty's wife separated from him and took their son to a friend's house in the gated community. The day before the shooting – April 16 – McCarty's wife had obtained a restraining order against McCarty, the press release said.

On the day of the incident Butte County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to the gated community after information was received that McCarty was attempting to enter the complex and had access to firearms. Two BCSO officers parked their cars at the entrance of the gate to prevent McCarty from getting through.

At about 1:15 a.m. on April 18, officers saw McCarty's car pull into the driveway just before he got out and walked to the gate. Officers attempted to speak with McCarty before he returned to his car, the release said.

After officers turned on the emergency lights, McCarty fired several shots from a 9mm Gun into the front of the patrol car. At least three of the shots hit the car and one shot went through the windshield.

An officer returned fire and McCarty was hit in the lower leg, incapacitating him. McCarty was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for treatment before being released to the Butte County Jail.

After the arrest, officers found a homemade semi-automatic 9mm ghost gun. Weapon near the spot where McCarty fell. In McCarty’s car, investigators found a loaded shotgun, a loaded AR15-style assault rifle and several fully loaded magazines, the press release said.

Given the charges against McCarty, he would likely face a life sentence, Ramsay said.

McCarty is being held without bail until he appears in court again on October 3 to Dates for a jury trial.
