Giants 11-0 Diamondbacks (September 24, 2024) Match Report

PHOENIX – Michael Conforto and Brett Wisely each hit a home run in the six-run third inning for San Francisco, and the Giants won their fifth straight victory over a playoff contender with a devastating 11-0 defeat of the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday night.

The Giants have nearly perfected the role of spoiler of late, winning 7-1 against Baltimore, Kansas City and Arizona. San Francisco extended its season-high by hitting five home runs against the Diamondbacks, including three against Brandon Pfaadt (10-10) in the first three innings.

“It happens and it's contagious,” Giants manager Bob Melvin said. “You start playing well and you just feel like you have a chance to win.”

Patrick Bailey hit a solo home run in the second inning, Conforto hit his 20th in the third, and Wisely followed with a three-run home run to give the Giants a 7-0 lead.

Tyler Fitzgerald hit a two-run homer and Heliot Ramos added a solo hit to his four hits. Logan Webb (13-10) allowed four hits in six scoreless innings.

“We're having fun and it's good to watch from the dugout,” said Webb, the Giants' first pitcher with consecutive 200-inning seasons since Jeff Samardzija in 2016-17. “We're making good plays, we're throwing well and that promotes chemistry.”

The Diamondbacks are working at the wrong time.

Arizona blew an 8-0 lead in a loss to Milwaukee, opening that series with a 6-3 loss, and had six hits Tuesday night. The Diamondbacks' lead over Atlanta, a 5-1 victory over the New York Mets, shrank to a half-game for the final NL playoff spot with four games remaining.

“I usually try to filter things and think of something positive, but I don't think there was much positivity in this game today,” Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said. “We need to play better baseball.”

Pfaadt rebounded from a poor start – eight runs in 1 2/3 innings – by recording 12 strikeouts in his last start in a win over Milwaukee.

The right-hander then put in another shaky performance.

Pfaadt allowed Bailey's eighth home run of the season in the second inning and got help later in the inning from right fielder Corbin Carroll, who reached over the wall to steal a three-run home run from Mike Yastrzemski.

No one stood a chance against Conforto's third-inning throw, a three-pointer off the overhang in left center field. Wisely followed a fielding error by Arizona shortstop Geraldo Perdomo with his three-pointer against Blake Walston.

Pfaadt allowed five runs – four earned – on six hits in 2 2/3 innings.

“I felt great physically and felt like we made some good pitches early on,” Pfaadt said. “We just dropped a couple of fastballs down the middle and paid the price for that.”
