What happened to Burgess in the season 12 premiere of Chicago PD?

Chicago Police Season 12 has officially begun and the entire Intelligence Unit is back. Well, almost all of them.

How to watch

Watch the Season 12 Premiere Chicago Police Wednesday, September 25, 10/9c on NBC.

Although the team has been expanded with Detective Emily Martel (presumably Upton's successor), we noticed that Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) was missing from the season premiere, “Ten Ninety-Nine.” So where is she – and will she return to the series?

Below you will find the simple explanation.

Where was Burgess on Chicago Police?

We get an answer early in the episode when Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) returns to the intelligence unit's office after a phone call with Burgess.

“She said the conference was good and that we learned a lot,” he tells Atwater. “But she's worried about her case and is thinking about coming home early.”

So there you have it. Burgess' absence is only temporary, and she will return to Chicago Police soon. However, her brief hiatus could also be a clue as to who on the team will be promoted to detective this season. The newest addition, Detective Martel, encouraged Ruzek to tell Burgess to stay at the conference because it could “give her an advantage” at the CPD.

“Someone is getting promoted, and I think it's someone who has wanted this for some time, and for us it made a lot of sense,” showrunner Gwen Sigan revealed on September 18 in an interview with TV Insider. “In the [writers’] Room, we've talked about this storyline for so long, but how do you make it a story? How do you make it interesting? How do you make it something that really tells you something about the person and isn't just a piece of paper?”

What happened to Burgess last season on Chicago Police?

The biggest news for Burgess in season 11? She's engaged to Ruzek – for the third time! In episode 3's “Safe Harbor,” he proposed to her in her bedroom, a very casual engagement.

“The lure for Ruzek and Burgess is over,” said Squerciati NBC Insider. “They're going to go through some things, but they're together now. They're the couple we rely on… They're both going to go through some things, as life and marriage do. But we're safe. I think we're safe.”

She continued, “They're just a comfortable, comfortable couple. They've been through everything. There's nothing they haven't been through. I think we were comfortable in our characters and our skin, and that really helped. I also think they should never have gotten engaged before because it was such a rocky, turbulent relationship. But because they've been through everything and managed to stay together, it seems like they've proven their mettle. They've been through fire, they're ready.”

Sigan has also confirmed that the couple will be getting married in the near future, and Amy Morton (Platt) even revealed that “someone might get married” this season.

“I think it will be fun [to write]”, said Sigan TV line in May. “There's definitely a possibility of, 'Are we doing the wedding next year? Are we planning? What are we going to see?' So I'm excited to find out all that.”
