Bedford Heights man charged in fatal head-on collision in Streetsboro

STREETSBORO, Ohio — A Bedford Heights man has been charged with vehicular manslaughter after he drove while under the influence of alcohol and crashed head-on into another vehicle, killing a 63-year-old Kent man, according to police.

Devonte Anthony is also charged with driving under the influence, illegal driving and careless driving in connection with the crash that killed George Shiner, according to a Streetsboro Police Department news release.

The charges come more than six months after the crash on Ohio 43, south of Kennedy Road. Police say Anthony, then 33, was driving a 2019 Honda Accord northbound just before 6:30 a.m. on March 14 when he attempted to pass several slower-moving vehicles despite the double yellow line on the road and as he approached a hilltop.

Shiner was driving a 2010 Honda Accord southbound when he was struck head-on by Anthony's vehicle, police said. Shiner was taken to a hospital by ambulance but died from his injuries.

In a press release, the police stated that the accident was due to “impairment and impatience.”

“In plain English, Devonte Anthony was under the influence of alcohol, crossed the double yellow line (to pass slower moving cars) and then collided head-on with an oncoming car, resulting in the death of Mr. Shiner,” police said.

According to police, Anthony was also seriously injured in the accident.
