Where is Burgess on Chicago PD? When Marina Squerciati will return and details on Burzek's wedding

[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for the Chicago P.D. Season 12 premiere “Ten Ninety-Nine.”]

The secret service is back – and very busy – if Chicago Police begins its 12th season, but one member of the unit is conspicuously missing: Burgess (Marina Squerciati).

The premiere doesn't keep us waiting to find out where she is, though. Early on, Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) comes in, having just spoken to her. “She said the conference was good, a lot was learned,” he tells Atwater (LaRoyce Hawkins). “She's worried about our caseload, so she's thinking about coming back early.” Martel (Victoria Cartagena), the unit's new detective who is killed in the final moments of the premiere (here's a secret tip!), says she shouldn't, because the CPD loves that kind of thing because it gives them an advantage.

Fortunately, fans won't have to wait too long to see Burgess again. Squerciati is back in episode 3, showrunner Gwen Sigan tells TV Insider.

She and Ruzek are also in for a treat. The two got engaged (again) last season and are now together. There will be a wedding this season.

“We want to show an authentic, long-term relationship. They get married and are there for each other. They are like a foundation, a rock and a sounding board for each other. The wedding will happen towards the end of the season, but until then we'll see them come back together as a family unit and deal with problems like couples do,” says Sigan.

“It's not necessarily easy, but the two of them are now looking at it from the perspective of what's good for our family, what's good for both of us,” she continues. “It's been fun to remember that they're still two different people, so their stories don't necessarily have to revolve around them as a couple. They go through a lot independently and still get through it together, but we see independent parts of their identities and who they are and also how that changes this year as new opportunities arise for both of them and how that affects them as a family unit but also as independent people.” Could those new opportunities include one of them being promoted to detective?
