Eleven minutes to stroll between the succulents. Fifteen minutes to linger in the gallery where “Blue Boy” is on display. And a lovely half hour to sit in the sun in the Chinese Garden.

We may not set a timer when we visit the Huntington Library, the Art Museum, and the Botanical Gardens in San Marino, but we have a general idea of how long it takes to engage with the art, plants, books, and things we truly love.

But on the last Friday and Saturday of October 2024, the sense of time could easily be confused, questioned, or at least happily changed.

That's when “Strange Science,” the cultural monument's annual Halloween celebration, returns with imaginative talks, unusual presentations, mysterious walks and plenty of stylish fun for adults.

The theme for 2024 is as enchanting as ever: “Out of Time,” so be sure to wear all your watches to the gathering, just in case you happen to stumble upon one or two fascinating portals.

The over-21 event will take place on the Huntington grounds on October 25, which is members' night, and October 26, which will be open to the general public.

Ambassadors from NASA-JPL will stop by to speak on the topic “NASA’s Time Machines: Looking into Our Past to Predict Our Future” – cool – and the Los Angeles Ballet will present a playful performance called “Lost in Time.”

Venture into the Amazon rainforest of the future with a Friday night offering, and ponder pet cemeteries on Saturday night.

Aerial acrobats, falconry, DJ music, food trucks and the opportunity to stop in a time rift to take an unforgettable snapshot are also part of the exciting program.

Tickets go on sale at 10am on September 26th, so mark this date in your calendar, even if you're willing to get a little lost in the rush, as this popular event sells out pretty predictably every year.

So, in short, tick tock: Plan to buy your ticket to the Huntington on October 25 and 26 to experience the Halloween season in style, full of “weird science,” whimsical delights, and the always excellent opportunity to visit the enchanted garden under the moonlight.
