Layoffs at ESPN continue shockingly: “This move is difficult to understand”

Eight days after the sudden departure of top NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, ESPN has lost another respected basketball reporter.

The Athletic reported Thursday that ESPN fired Zach Lowe on Thursday to save money. According to The Athletic, Lowe earned more than $1 million per year.

Lowe joined ESPN in 2012 as a writer at Grantland and most recently served as a senior writer, hosting The Lowe Post podcast and also appearing on NBA Today and NBA Countdown. Awful Announced reported that Lowe was on ESPN yesterday to preview the Los Angeles Lakers' season.

“Given that ESPN just lost Adrian Wojnarowski in unexpected circumstances and has struggled for years to feature a revolving door of NBA personalities… this move is difficult to understand, no matter how much it helps ESPN's accounting department,” wrote Awful Anncreasing on Thursday.

In mid-August, ESPN fired “NFL Countdown” host Sam Ponder and football analyst Robert Griffin III for financial reasons, The Athletic reported. Both people earned more than $1 million per season.

Longtime ESPN contributor and host of “Get Up” and “Greeny” Mike Greenberg took over “NFL Countdown.”

Then on Sept. 18, Wojnarowski announced he was retiring from ESPN and journalism to become general manager of men's basketball at St. Bonaventure, his alma mater. He was introduced there on Wednesday.
