Insurance agent faces fraud charges after providing false accident date

JACKSON COUNTY, NC (FOX Carolina) – The commissioner of the North Carolina Department of Insurance (NCDI) said an insurance agent has been charged with fraud after providing the incorrect date of a car accident.

NCDI special agents said 37-year-old Demetria Bates Poag claimed she was in a car accident on May 15, 2024. The accident actually occurred on May 12, 2025, when she was uninsured.

The amount of the claim was $4,314.

Poag was served a citation by Jackson County Sheriff's deputies and released on $15,000 bail.

She is scheduled to appear in Jackson County District Court on November 4, 2024.

“Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet,” Commissioner Mike Causey said in a news release. “About 20 cents of every dollar in insurance premiums goes toward covering the costs of fraud. I am fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina.”
