Probation officer has to answer in dispute over deputy

A Hollywood man accused of assaulting a sheriff's deputy who found him slumped over the steering wheel on Plum Canyon Road just over a year ago waived his right to a preliminary hearing at a courthouse last week in San Fernando.

Jonathan Michael “JJ” Huehl, 41, of Hollywood, was taken into custody on September 13, 2023, after an altercation with Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station officers, who found the parolee in a shopping center parking lot around 11:30 a.m to sheriff's officials.

He has been in custody since his arrest, according to custody records available online from the LA County Sheriff's Department.

On Friday, Huehl waived his legal right to a hearing where prosecutors present their case against a defendant and the judge determines whether the allegations are sufficient to warrant a trial.

Huehl had to answer charges 1 to 7, including: assault on a police officer; resisting arrest; assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer; and weapons charges stemming from his previous convictions.

He is due back in court for arraignment on October 4th and will then be asked to make a formal statement about the allegations.

A deputy reported that Huehl appeared to be passed out in his car with the engine running, and after seeing drug paraphernalia within his reach and learning that Huehl said he had been paroled, the deputy searched the car, according to court records.

Due to Huehl's apparent condition, officers also called fire department medical personnel and then searched his car while waiting for medical personnel to arrive.

After finding a 9 mm handgun during the search, officers began arresting Huehl, who is said to be 6 feet tall and 150 pounds, according to incident reports.

Two police officers and a good Samaritan nearby eventually subdued him, officials said.
