Rex Ryan: The Cowboys “couldn’t find the money” to hire me as defensive coordinator

With the Cowboys reportedly planning to hire Mike Zimmer as the team's defensive coordinator, former Jets and Bills coach Rex Ryan fact-checked his colleague Adam Schefter in real time.

“First of all, I’m not so sure Zimmer has that job right now,” Ryan said. “I'm not sure about that. I can honestly say that I don't think that's a fact at the moment.”

Ryan now has more to say about what happened.

“I could have fixed that [the Cowboys’ defense] in a New York minute,” Rex Ryan told ESPN Radio USA today. “But apart from that, They couldn't raise the moneyotherwise I would have been there.”

It's unclear how much Ryan wanted or how much the Cowboys were paying Zimmer. It's consistent with the idea that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is low-key and cheap.

Ryan also fired unprovoked shots at Zimmer.

“They brought in a guy who finished 29th in the league the last two years in Minnesota. “The enthusiasm that he brought with him when he left, that's the guy that's going to inspire you?” Ryan said. “This could end really badly for Dallas.”

Things could be really bad for Ryan right now, especially if Zimmer has his cell phone number.
