“Angel Reese speaks out about the sudden dismissal of ex-Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon.”

The women's basketball community was turned upside down Thursday night when it was announced that Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon had been fired.

In retrospect, perhaps this shouldn't have been a surprise. Although plagued by injuries in the second half of the season, Chicago seemed to get worse as a team over time and was notorious for its inability to make plays late in close games. Weatherspoon was heavily criticized by fans for this.

Since Weatherspoon had no experience as a women's professional baseball coach prior to her Sky job, hiring her before this season was always going to be a gamble. And unfortunately the risk didn't pay off.

While Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese had some criticism of Weatherspoon in their postseason exit meeting on Tuesday, it was clear that the two had a great relationship throughout the season. And on Thursday, Reese took to X to share her raw and honest thoughts about Weatherspoon's firing.

“I am heartbroken. I am literally at a loss for words knowing what this woman meant to me at such a pivotal point in my life. She was the only person who believed in me. The one who trusted me. Many don't even do it.” “Do you know what it's like to be a black woman in sports when no one believes in you. All the crazy circumstances we've been through this year, and when your back was against the wall, you always believed.”

“I came to Chicago because of YOU. You were an unsung hero in my life. In a short period of time, we built a relationship that will last forever. I will never question God why he brings people into my life and takes them away from me in the capacity that I need them, but I have always believed that everyone comes into your life for a reason and a certain season is. You were the best reason and the best season, but I can't thank you enough. I love you, Tspoon. @Finisher_11″.

Reese is not happy with Chicago's decision to let go of their revered head coach. Maybe that meant Reese didn't agree with GM Jeff Pagliocca as much as she'd like to believe.

Chicago's search for a new head coach just became one of the most compelling storylines of the WNBA offseason.
