Angel Reese was at a loss for words after Sky reportedly sacked head coach Teresa Weatherspoon

The Chicago Sky reportedly fired head coach Teresa Weatherspoon less than a year after the franchise hired her, shaking star rookie Angel Reese to the core.

When it was announced that Weatherspoon was relieved of her duties, Reese responded X to express how “heartbroken” she was that her coach will no longer be in the building.

“I am literally at a loss for words knowing what this woman meant to me at such a pivotal point in my life,” Weatherspoon said. “She was the only person who believed in me.” The one who trusted me. Many don't even know what it's like to be a black woman [sic] in sports when no one believes in you. You had a hard job. All the crazy circumstances we've been through this year and when your back was against the wall, you always believed. I came to Chicago because of YOU. You were an unsung hero in my life.

Reese went on to talk about the deep relationship she developed with Weatherspoon despite only working with her for one season.

“In a short space of time, we have built a relationship that will last forever. I will never question God why he brings people into my life and takes them away from me to the extent I need them, but I have always believed that everyone does.” “There is a reason and a specific one time in your life,” Reese said. “You were the best reason and the best season. You don't deserve this, but I can't thank you enough. I love you, Tspoon.”

While Reese quickly became a star in the WNBA with the Sky, averaging 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game, the Sky went 13-27 and failed to reach the playoffs for the first time in five years.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Weatherspoon's firing late Thursday evening.

Despite winning a WNBA title in 2021, the Sky are now looking for their fourth head coach since then.

Weatherspoon was someone Sky players publicly praised during the season, including Reese. However, according to the Chicago Sun Times, a “distance arose” during exit interviews and the team decided to go in a different direction.

Weatherspoon played in the WNBA himself from 1997 to 2004, playing all but one of her eight seasons for the New York Liberty. Early in her career, she was named Defensive Player of the Year in two consecutive seasons and appeared in five consecutive All-Star Games from 1999 to 2003.
