Officials called a facemask penalty on the wrong team, giving the Giants a loss

The Giants failed to score in their 2023 season opener against the Cowboys at MetLife Stadium and fell 40-0. After a trip on Thursday Night Football, they've already accomplished more.

The Giants forced a three-and-out on their first drive and then darted down the field for a field goal.

But the officials squandered a better chance for a potential touchdown for the Giants.

On second-and-7 from the Dallas 37, Daniel Jones scrambled for 4 yards. But officials penalized Giants tight end Daniel Bellinger for a facemask penalty, sending them back to the Dallas 48 for a second-and-18.

However, replays showed it was Cowboys linebacker DeMarvion Overshown who grabbed Bellinger's facemask.

So the officials penalized the wrong team.

The Giants should have had a first down in the red zone.

Instead, the Giants settled for a 52-yard field goal from Greg Joseph three plays after the errant penalty.

Rookie Malik Nabers executed a double play on cornerback Andrew Booth and caught a 39-yard pass to create good field position on the first drive. Trevon Diggs now travels with Nabers for the Cowboys.
