Woman killed in Greenville shooting, suspect arrested after manhunt

GREENVILLE, Ohio (WKEF) – A woman is dead and the suspect has been arrested in connection with a shooting in Greenville on Thursday, September 26th.

Greenville Police Department officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Martin Street around 8:30 p.m. to a report that a woman had been shot. Greenville Township Rescue and CareFlight were also called to the scene.

Greenville Police Chief Ryan Benge said when officers arrived it was learned that 34-year-old Brianne Otley of Greenville had suffered a gunshot wound. Zachery Gilbert, 25, of Greenville ran from the area before officers arrived.

Benge said Greenville police received assistance from the Darke County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol and set up a cordon near the shooting scene to locate Gilbert.

As Otley attempted life-saving measures, he was pronounced dead about an hour later after a cordon was set up.

Gilbert was several blocks north of where the shooting occurred around 10:27 p.m. He was taken into custody without incident, Benge said.

Benge stated that investigators assume that the two knew each other and that there was some history.

Dayton 24/7 Now Benge asked if Greenville was like other cities in Ohio where murders occur.

“Well, it actually happens. I wouldn't say it happens often, but it does happen, and we were lucky with the help of the highway patrol and some of the resources from the sheriff's office that they made available very quickly. “It was a great team effort and we can’t thank them enough for their help with everything,” Benge said.

Benge stressed the importance of the suspect potentially still being armed and alerts being issued around the city to alert residents in the area to shelter in place.

“We wanted to make sure everyone in the community was safe, especially in the area where the suspect may still have been,” Benge said. “But those resources and teamwork really paid off tonight.”

Benge pointed out that the last murder in Greenville was a little over a year ago.

Gilbert is being held provisionally on murder charges. He is being held in the Darke County Jail.

Further investigation is ongoing and the case is being reviewed by the Darke County Prosecutor's Office.
