Will Jerry Jones fire Mike McCarthy during the 2024 season?

Mike McCarthy deserved better. It could be that he is getting worse.

After a Week 1 win in Cleveland, the Cowboys face a week-long road trip to New Jersey. If they lose to the Giants and have games against the Steelers and Lions, the head coach could be there great danger to get the starting signal at the beginning of week 7.

Owner Jerry Jones fired a coach only once during the season. When Jones relieved Wade Phillips of his duties during the 2010 season, Jones had his future successor, Jason Garrett, ready to go. Who would replace McCarthy this time?

The obvious choice is my good friend Mike Zimmer. But the defense stinks right now. That would make it more difficult to hand Zimmer the reins.

Maybe it would be special teams coordinator John Fassel; After Jeff Fisher was fired eight years ago, he served as interim head coach in LA.

Whatever the case, a loss tonight could cause the wheels to come off. Dallas will be the underdog next Sunday night in Pittsburgh. The following Sunday could see a Honolulu Blue takeover in Arlington and the Lions return to town. That 1-2 record could easily become 1-5.

It also doesn't help that McCarthy is in the final year of his contract. It doesn't help that Jones acted like the offseason only started on Labor Day. It doesn't help that the Cowboys have a weak defense against the run.

It doesn't matter if Jerry decides to make a change. And that change could come if the Cowboys survive six games with five losses – and have a very small margin for error throughout the season.
