Three people, including two children, died in an accident in downtown Omaha

Omaha police are investigating a two-vehicle crash Friday evening near Gene Leahy Mall that killed three people, including two children. Three other people, including another child, were critically injured. First responders arrived on the scene just before 1:30 a.m. near 10th and Douglas streets. Police believe one of the drivers was speeding when he hit another SUV. Due to the force of the impact, both SUVs crashed into guardrails and caught fire. “The vehicles were completely engulfed in flames, so the first priority of work was to extinguish the fire,” said Omaha Police Sergeant Adam Turnbull. Sergeant Turnbull said this served as a reminder to slow down. “Whatever you need to do, it can take 10 minutes. If you're late, you're late. Nobody likes it, but the consequences can be much worse,” Sergeant said. Turnbull said. Omaha police have not identified anyone involved in the crash. Officers are cordoning off the area near 10th and Douglas Streets while they investigate. Police said they hope to reopen it by the morning drive.
