Harris visits southern border; Trump will speak in Michigan

The battleground primary vote war may have been decided this week before a single ballot was cast. The weapon of choice: private surveys. The likely winner: Vice President Kamala Harris.

In a wild election season that saw Democrats at the top of their game when they drafted Harris for President Joe Biden – and Republican Donald Trump survived two assassination attempts while trying to become the first former president in modern history to do one Avenging loss is the story of Nebraska The Omaha-based 2nd Congressional District is one of the most compelling subplots.

Party officials and political analysts are intrigued by the district because it is a hotly contested district in one of only two states – Maine is the other – that awards an elector to the candidate who receives the most votes in each congressional district. With tens of thousands of votes cast in some states in the recent presidential election, there are scenarios in which Nebraska's 2nd District could determine who wins the Electoral College and the presidency.

That's why Trump went to court to force Nebraska to change its law to give all electors to the statewide winner – he received 58.5% statewide in 2020. But his effort collapsed this week when Republican Senator Mike McDonnell – a former Democrat – said he would not support the plan.

As intense as Republicans' lobbying efforts were — Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., a close Trump ally, traveled to the state to push for a change in the law — Democrats' counteroffensive proved more effective.
