Miguel Oliveira suffers a serious accident in the first FP1 of the Indonesian MotoGP, which leaves him out of the weekend

Miguel Oliveira was involved in a serious tailgate accident during the opening practice session of the 2024 Indonesian MotoGP. He was taken to a local hospital after suffering a fractured right wrist, meaning the injury means he will miss the rest of the weekend and casts serious doubt over his participation in next weekend's Japanese MotoGP.

A dusty section of the double left turn 3-4 may have led to the incident. However, Oliveira was the only rider to crash in the MotoGP session this morning, although several other riders from Moto2 and Moto3 struggled.

After the fiery accident that sent the Portuguese driver plummeting down the track, Oliveira came to a stop and sat upright on the outside curb. The marshals then placed him on a stretcher and transported him to the medical center for examination.

Oliveira secured victory in the first race at the Mandalika International Circuit of 2022. However, his chances of delivering a strong performance on his Trackhouse Racing Aprilia MotoGP motorcycle are virtually non-existent due to his fracture. Meanwhile, teammate Raul Fernandez finished 20th in FP1, while Maverick Vinales emerged as the best performing Aprilia rider, taking second place.

Regarding the incident, Trackhouse Racing said in a statement:

“Miguel suffered a fractured right wrist. He is undergoing a three-dimensional CT scan at Mataram Hospital to assess the need for surgery. We will provide more information as soon as we can.”

Oliveira begins his sixth year in the MotoGP class and his fourteenth year in the paddock. He will join the Prima Pramac Yamaha Factory Team for the 2025-26 MotoGP season, a deal that was officially announced earlier this month. Speaking about the move to Yamaha, he said in a statement:

“It is a great privilege for me to represent such an iconic brand in our sport like Yamaha. During my years of development and arrival in MotoGP, I have always looked at the blue bikes with great enthusiasm.”

“It is now a reality and I would like to thank Yamaha Motor Company for their commitment to me during such an important transition phase of the project. Mr. Lin Jarvis was a key figure in initiating discussions and bringing this venture to fruition. “I think I can do that.” useful in this transition phase of bringing the bike back to the forefront.

“I would like to thank Mr. Campinoti, Gino Borsoi and all Pramac employees for embarking on this journey together. I couldn’t be happier and more excited to start this new chapter.”

Lin Jarvis, Managing Director of Yamaha Motor Racing, added:

“We are pleased to announce that a professional and experienced rider like Miguel Oliveira is joining the Yamaha roster for 2025-26 and warmly welcome him to the Yamaha MotoGP project.”

“Miguel is a rider who has the technical know-how, experience, speed and precision required to improve the performance of the Yamaha YZR-M1. We very much look forward to working with him as a key member of the Yamaha MotoGP project and he can count on our full support.”
