Murder suspect arrested in Greenville

GREENVILLE – On Sept. 26 at approximately 8:30 p.m., Greenville Police Department officers were dispatched to the 700 block of Martin Street on a report that a woman had been shot. Greenville Township Rescue, the City of Greenville Fire Department and CareFlight from Miami Valley Hospital were also dispatched.

When officers arrived, it was discovered that the victim, Brianne Otley, 34, of Greenville, had suffered a gunshot wound. The suspect, Zachery Gilbert, 25, of Greenville, fled the area before officers arrived.

The Darke County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio State Highway Patrol were requested to assist, and both agencies responded quickly to assist. To locate Gilbert, a cordon was set up near where the shooting occurred.

At 9:17 p.m., the victim, Brianne Otley, was pronounced dead while attempting life-saving measures. At 10:27 p.m., the suspect, Zachery Gilbert, was several blocks north of where the shooting occurred. Gilbert is being held provisionally on murder charges. Further investigation is ongoing and the case is being reviewed by the Darke County Prosecutor's Office.
