I-85 closed in Gaston County after tree and semi-truck incident

GASTONIA, NC (WBTV) – An incident involving a semi-truck and a downed tree closed I-85 in Gaston County Friday morning.

The incident occurred on I-85 South near Exit 19 for Ozark Avenue. Gastonia Police said.

Police said traffic was being diverted onto Ozark Avenue. It is unclear when the highway might reopen.

Traffic maps show significant congestion in the area.

Elsewhere in the Carolinas, Tropical Storm Helene has now flooded many roads and caused additional traffic problems. Some of these drastic closures are listed below:

  • Statesville Boulevard is closed due to flooding in Salisbury
  • Heavy traffic congestion on I-277 in Charlotte due to construction
  • Tree in roadway blocks I-77 in Charlotte near mile marker 18.6
  • All lanes of I-26 are closed south of Asheville between exits 49 and 53 due to flooding
  • West NC-10 closed from Long Drive to Sigmon Dairy Road in Newton due to downed trees/power lines
  • Stough Road in both directions in Concord near Roberta Road
  • Jennings Road was closed in both directions near Redemption Road in Statesville
  • Philadelphia Church Road was closed near NC-200 in Stanfield because a tree fell on power lines
  • Both directions of Morehead Road near Hudspeth Road in Concord were closed due to downed trees and power lines
  • Union Road near Wilson Farm Road, near the South Carolina state line in Gaston County, closed because the road is “impassable.”
  • Shady Grove Road near Nolden Creek in Burke County was closed in both directions due to downed trees and power lines
  • The John's River Loop was closed in both directions near NC-18 near Morganton in Burke County due to high water
