Kristen Bell called on Instagram to “get rid of AI” before becoming its official voice

Meta has signed deals with high-profile actors to lend their voices to the Meta AI chatbot, including Kristen Bell among the first voices. It's a bit of a surprise that Bell lends her voice. Back in June, she openly expressed her opposition to the use of her data by Metas AI.

She reposted a popular Instagram message in which she stated that she disagreed with Meta using her content and likeness to train large language models and demanded that Instagram “get rid of the AI program.”

The prompt claims that by reposting Meta, users are denying permission to have their personal information used for these purposes. Celebrities like Jessica Chastain, Sarah Paulson, and Ashley Tisdale have reposted a recent version of this prompt—though reposting doesn't exclude you.

This unease stems from an update to Meta's terms of service in June, allowing the company to use posts, images and online tracking data to train its Llama 3 AI model. You can unsubscribe through a number of settings, but not through a post on Instagram.

The role of AI in the creative industries has sparked heated debate. The entertainment union SAG-AFTRA is fighting to ensure that its members are not replaced by AI without consent and is working with the state of California to pass AI laws that restrict the cloning of AI actors. But artists and actors aren't necessarily against the technology itself – they just want fair compensation. In the case of Meta The Wall Street Journal reports that the actors received millions for their contributions.
