The bridges to Anna Maria Island could remain closed for days or weeks

ANNA MARIA ISLAND, Fla. (WWSB) – ABC7's Brigham Harris has learned that the damage caused by Helene on Anna Maria Island is so extensive that it could be days or weeks before residents can return.

All access to the island was blocked. A home on Holmes Beach caught fire, causing a woman and her dog to flee into the floodwaters for safety reasons.

There are reports of extreme flooding in several parts of the city.

Manatee County Sheriff's Public Information Officer Randy Warren told ABC7 it was some of the worst damage he's seen in his 30 years in law enforcement.

Holmes Beach Police shared photos on their Facebook page with a quote: “The beach came across Gulf Drive in many places. It will take time to make the island safe and navigable, so please be patient. The first response teams are working hard to bring you home.”

Emergency crews are working to rescue those stranded and fight fires and other emergencies. The bridges remain closed and it could be days or weeks before residents are allowed to return, according to Warren.
