Alex Volkanovski believes fighting Conor McGregor makes sense at the moment

Former UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski isn't exactly waiting for his chance in a title fight against the winner of Ilia Topuria and Max Holloway at UFC 308.

Volkanovski is in limbo as he awaits the outcome of UFC 308. Although many believe “The Great” should take some time off after his knockout loss at UFC 298, he is looking forward to another fight. This time he has his sights set on the biggest name in the sport: Conor McGregor.

McGregor doesn't have an immediate opponent as Michael Chandler takes on Charles Oliveira again at UFC 309. Speaking to Submission Radio on September 27, Volkanovski expressed his interest in fighting “The Notorious.”

“If Ilia wins [at UFC 308] “I don’t know if he wants to fight,” Volkanovski explained. “Is he going to wait another six or seven months?” That’s why I’m saying “Conor McGregor” now because I could do “Ilia” straight after.”

Although Chandler is McGregor's confirmed opponent, the Irish star still has two fights remaining on his UFC contract. It's entirely possible that one of these fights could be against Volkanovski, especially since the Australian fighter has significant star power in the promotion.

McGregor also noted that he will be ready for his next fight “whenever it is, wherever it is.”
