According to police, the Tesla driver was traveling 132 miles per hour on I-95 seconds before the fatal crash

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Florida — State troopers arrested a Northeast Miami-Dade man Thursday on vehicular homicide charges; They say he drove a Tesla at more than twice the speed on the interstate for 95 seconds before crashing into a Jeep in 2023, killing one person and injuring another.

The accident occurred at approximately 3:15 a.m. on July 2, 2023 in the northbound lanes of the highway between Miami Gardens Drive and Ives Dairy Road.

Authorities said vehicle data showed 26-year-old Michael Joseph Genao was driving a Tesla Model 3 at 132 mph about two seconds before the crash.

According to an arrest warrant, Genao, a resident of the nearby Ojus area, was attempting to change lanes when he struck the Jeep at 106 miles per hour, ejecting the two occupants, one of whom died.

The arrest warrant does not identify the victims.

Genao was charged with reckless vehicular homicide and was being held late Friday morning at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on $100,000 bond.
