The magic behind the F-35's supersonic speed

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – We are just one day away from the return of the American air show to the original Fighter Town USA.

F-35s fly at supersonic speeds but can stop and hover in the air.

Major Craig Norris will sit in the cockpit of one of the jets.

“If you look around the side of the aircraft in this engine casing, you will see what are called roll post arms – these come out the side. This will give us that lateral stability,” he said.

Norris is ready to woo the Miramar audience for the first time as a demo pilot.

“This is our homecoming show, so it’s pretty exciting to be a part of it,” he says.

However, flying is nothing new for him; It is a Norris family tradition to serve our country as a pilot.

“My grandfather was a pilot in World War II. My father was also a naval pilot. My little brother is actually a Hornet pilot on the same base; he flies the F-18 Hornet,” Norris said.

Norris says it's special knowing he's making children's faces light up in the crowd.

“I was one of those kids growing up. So I walked around the air show circuit with my dad,” he says.

He says the magic in the sky requires a lot of preparation, and he praises the hard-working Marines who maintain and care for the jets.

The Miramar Air Show takes place from Friday, September 27th to Sunday, September 29th.
