Crews work to recover victims of a plane crash in Utah Lake

A single-engine plane crashed into Utah Lake.

Utah County Sheriff Sgt. Garrett Duston said witnesses reported this incident at 10:10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 27.

The plane was cleared to land at the Provo airport before crashing into the lake, Sgt. Spencer Cannon of the Utah County Sheriff's Office said.

Saratoga Springs Supervisor Jess Campbell reported the single-engine plane was about 10 feet underwater. A parachute was deployed but arrived too late to be effective.

Officials said they were not sure if there were anyone else on the plane besides the pilot. As of 12:15 p.m., no one had emerged from the water.

Chief Campbell said crews will remain in recovery mode for now, working to clean up the debris and fuel leak.

The Utah County Sheriff's Office and State Parks are leading this investigation with assistance from the Provo Police Department, Provo Fire Department, Utah Highway Patrol Drive Team and search and rescue teams.

Utah State Park remains closed until further notice.
