UAW Urges Stellantis Workers to Vote to Strike

The UAW union's Stellantis Council met yesterday to discuss the embattled automaker's “continued failure” to honor the agreement to end the 2023 walkout, and their latest union memo didn't raise much eyebrows.

It's not a good time to be Stellantis. Its dealers are suing the company's leadership and threatening to fire the company's controversial CEO Carlos Tavares as sales in North America continue to collapse, the company is unable to move its new, high-profile electric Fiat and its first luxury electric Jeep is not ready yet. And now it's getting even worse.

In an email from the UAW today (received at 4:55 p.m. CST), UAW President Shawn Fain wrote, “For years, the company picked us off plant by plant, and we lacked the will or resources to fight back.” Today it's different. Because we stood together and demanded the right to strike over job security – product commitment – we have the means to fight back and win…We unanimously recommend to the membership that every UAW worker at Stellantis prepare for a fight, and we all prepare for it Vote YES to authorize a strike at Stellantis.”

The dispute appears to stem from Stellantis' inability to commit to new products (and continued employment) at its UAW-run plants, as well as other failures to meet its obligations to end the strike. This is despite a share buyback worth 3 billion euros carried out at the end of 2023.

I have included the memo in its entirety below. Take a look for yourself and let us know what you think of the UAW's call to action in the comments.
