Man charged with bank robbery in DeKalb, accused of stealing $50,000 cash – Shaw Local

DeKALB – DeKalb police arrested a Chicago man Friday who was allegedly wanted for armed robbery of a credit union this summer, taking more than $50,000 in cash.

According to a news release from the DeKalb Police Department, Matthew L. Martin, 43, was arrested at his Chicago home Friday morning after “a brief standoff.” DeKalb, Chicago police and the FBI's Special Weapons and Tactics Team arrested Martin on a warrant around 6 a.m

Martin is charged with armed robbery, armed habitual felon and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. If convicted of either armed robbery or being an armed habitual felon, both Class X felonies, Martin could face up to 30 years in prison.

DeKalb police responded at 8:21 a.m. July 31 to the Illinois Community Credit Union, 1500 Barber Greene Road, for a reported armed bank robbery. However, one suspect fled and remained on the run. The credit union remained briefly closed to customers while authorities responded.

Police said they conducted a “meticulous and comprehensive investigation.” They interviewed several employees who were at the bank at the time of the robbery and reviewed surveillance footage.

DeKalb police said the footage showed a man wearing camouflage clothing and a mask armed with a gun forcing his way into the credit union and ordering bank employees to open a safe and put money in a duffel bag, the release said .

The man made off with thousands of dollars. Police say the armed robber is Martin, who is being held at the DeKalb County Jail in Sycamore.
