The CEO of WeightWatchers abruptly leaves

WeightWatchers announced Friday that CEO Sima Sistani has resigned and will no longer serve on the company's board after leading the weight-loss company for two and a half years.

Sistani was replaced by independent board member Tara Comonte, who will serve as interim CEO. Comonte was previously president and CFO of Shake Shack.

During her tenure, Sistani oversaw WeightWatchers' 2023 acquisition of telehealth platform Sequence, now known as WeightWatchers Clinic, and expanded into prescribing obesity medications. During her tenure, Sistani expressed the use of weight loss medications in various interviews.

Still, the company's shares have plunged about 90% this year as GLP-1 drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have grown in popularity and impacted the company's traditional weight-loss program.

In February, the company's stock took another hit after it was announced that prominent shareholder Oprah Winfrey would be stepping down from the board and donating her shares to the National Museum of African American History and Culture.

Comonte joined the WeightWatchers board of directors in June 2023. She was previously CEO of TMRW Life Sciences after serving as president and chief financial officer at fast-food chain Shake Shack.

The company also reiterated its previous guidance for full-year 2024 revenue and adjusted operating income on Friday.
