Sentencing of driver in fatal Valley traffic accident delayed

The crash killed GCU freshmen Abriauna Hoffman, 18, Elaine Hunter Balberdi, 19, and Magdalyn (Maggie) Ogden, 18.

The sentencing of the man convicted of killing three Grand Canyon University students in a 2022 traffic accident has been delayed.

On August 14, 27-year-old Vincent Ian Acosta pleaded guilty to three counts of second-degree murder in connection with a fatal crash that occurred on October 10, 2022 in New River on Interstate 17 near Table Mesa Road .

The crash killed GCU freshmen Abriauna Hoffman, 18, Elaine Hunter Balberdi, 19, and Magdalyn (Maggie) Ogden, 18.

At the time of Acosta's arrest, the driver's blood test results indicated he may have been impaired at the time of the crash, court records show.

Acosta was scheduled to be sentenced on September 27, but the judge in the case recused herself. No information was released about why the judge recused herself.

The case has been assigned to Judge Sam Myers and Acosta is scheduled to be sentenced on October 8.
