A California man accused of throwing a bomb at the courthouse says the government took away his guns

The man who allegedly threw a bomb at a California courthouse this week, injuring five people, said he was upset that his firearms were taken away, authorities said.

Nathaniel James McGuire, 20, of Santa Maria, is accused of maliciously damaging a building with an explosive, the Justice Department said Friday.

He was scheduled to appear in federal court in Los Angeles on Friday.

“This defendant must now stand trial in federal court for his alleged attack that injured at least five people and shocked a district court and an entire community,” said U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland.

McGuire entered the lobby of a Santa Maria courthouse on Wednesday and threw a bag containing a bomb that exploded, federal prosecutors said. After the explosion, he fled on foot.

Five people were injured.

McGuire was arrested a short time later as he tried to get into a Ford Mustang parked outside the building, authorities said. He allegedly shouted that “the government has taken his guns and that everyone must fight, rise up and rebel,” the Justice Department said.

Police believe McGuire's motive stems from a previous arrest for possession of an unregistered firearm. He was scheduled to appear in court the morning of the incident.

In McGuire's car, a Santa Barbara sheriff's deputy allegedly discovered ammunition, a flare gun and a box of fireworks. Inside, authorities found a shotgun, a rifle, more ammunition, a suspected bomb and 10 Molotov cocktails, prosecutors said.

The police later recovered the bomb.

At McGuire's home, authorities allegedly found an empty can with nails taped to the outside, a duffel bag containing matches, black powder, used and unused fireworks, and papers that appeared to be recipes for explosive materials.

According to police, none of the five people hit by the explosion suffered life-threatening injuries. Four were transported directly to the hospital from the scene of the accident, the fifth traveled to the hospital alone.
